Job Vacancy - Senior Java Developer

Then come and join The European Library team at the Europeana Foundation, based in the National Library of the Netherlands in The Hague.


  The European Library sits at the cutting edge of digital library developments, with established core competencies in large-scale data aggregation, indexing, clustering and searching.  Our vision is to position libraries as a vital node in European research infrastructures and we are active in a number of European projects to meet these aims.

We work closely with Europeana, the gateway to digitised cultural heritage.  One of our joint projects, Europeana Cloud, aims to establish a cloud-based infrastructure for Europeana and its partners, including The European Library.

We are looking for a Senior Java Developer to take a core role in the development of Cloud as a flexible, shared infrastructure, using state-of-the-art cloud technologies. Your tasks will also include enhancement and maintenance of our current infrastructure.  You will  play a significant role in designing and implementing new features in our customised framework for the aggregation, normalization and enrichment of library data. Applying and ensuring good software development practices according to agile development processes and continuous integration are a given.

Our technical team is advised by The European Library's Technical Working Group, made up of technical experts from all over Europe. You will take on an active role within this group, with the possibility of travelling to some of the national and research libraries across Europe. In addition, you will help provide technical support to our partners, in liaison with our account coordinators. Maintaining good awareness of software developments relevant to The European Library portal will be important for this position.

To lead development and design within The European Library and its projects, with a focus on Europeana Cloud

 

Key tasks

  • To take a core development role for a shared cloud infrastructure, designed and built by a joint technical team from The European Library, Europeana and the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Centre (Poland)
  • To develop and maintain The European Library aggregation infrastructure
  • To assist in the technical development activities of The European Library's research and innovation projects
  • To write associated technical documentation
  • To provide technical support to The European Library partners
  • To participate in The European Library's Technical Working Group
  • To develop a good awareness of software developments relevant to The European Library

 

Profile

Skills Required

  • Minimum experience in Java developing of at least 5 years
  • Excellent knowledge of Java
  • Excellent level of spoken and written English

 

Strong plus

  • Experience with Cassandra
  • Experience with Openstack (Swift, Nova)

Plus

  • Experience with Lucene, Solr, ElasticSearch
  • Experience with distributed computing like MapReduce (Hadoop, Spark)
  • Working knowledge of nosql databases (HBase, MongoDB, ...)
  • Experience in data mining and information retrieval
  • OSGi and Spring MVC Framework
  • Maven, Git, JUnit Testing and Continuous Integration
  • Development environment: Eclipse or IntelliJ IDEA on Mac OS, Windows, or Linux

 

Competencies

  • Excellent knowledge of Java and Design Patterns
  • Fascination for high-quality code and development practices
  • Broad knowledge about best practices in the development of backend systems

Experience/interests

  • Enthusiasm for the cultural and educational sectors - ideally, some of your programming experience will have been gained in a library, museum, archive, academic or publishing sector

The European Library

Established since 2005, The European Library offers a single point of access to the bibliographical and digital collections of the national and research libraries of Europe. It is a service of the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL) and is based in the National Library of The Netherlands in The Hague.  The European Library is the library-domain aggregator for Europeana, a gateway to the digital cultural heritage of Europe's museums, libraries, and archives.

 

Employer

Staff of The European Library are employed by the Europeana Foundation, based in The Hague. 

 

Terms and conditions of employment

The salary for this post is in line with the Collective Labour agreement for Research Centres, scale 10, (2.500 - 3.800 Euro gross per month, holiday allowance and annual bonus not included) depending on your experience and skills. In addition, you will have 42 days holiday per year, a holiday allowance (8%), an annual bonus (around 8%) and good fringe benefits.

This position is for 12 months in the first instance. Any renewal is subject to suitable performance and availability of funding. The contract is for a maximum of 40 working hours a week.
