Description

The Catalogues from major Department stores are part of the broader e-collection of the National Library of Denmark which consists of selected digitized topical internal publications published by companies, associations and institutions. Daells Varehus, one of the major department stores, opened in 1910. The collection includes more than 200 catalogues from Daells Varehus, the oldest catalogues (date from 1911) to the most recent until the store closed in 1999. From 1910, Daells was the department store that catered for all age groups and both sexes. It sold solid quality at discount prices. Daells revolutionized retail trading with its mail-order catalogue. New types of goods were dispatched to the entire country, especially to small towns with no clothes shops or toy shops benefited from the mail-order catalogues. After many years of success in the 1980s came a period of austerity and in 1999 Daells store closed. The journalist and author Erik Nørgaard said that the Catalogues of the Daells Department store are the most important cultural magazines of Denmark! The collection also include catalogues from other department stores like Buldog, Fonnesbech, Magasin, Illum Havemann, Messen og Sommers Magasiner. Only Magasin and Illum exist today. Thanks to the law on legal deposit, the Royal Library has an almost complete collection of the Catalogues. They have now been digitized and are freely available online.
