Editorial Working Group Meeting - 28-29 May 2008

3rd EWG meeting - RSL - Russia Moscow

THEME - "Transforming the user experience: optimising the impact and reach of our content".

The Editorial Working Group plays a key role in showcasing the collections of the national libraries through the portal of The European Library. The Group currently represents around 70 members of the national libraries of Europe.

Background

Members of the EWG meet every 2 years. Previous meetings were held in Lisbon (2004) and Zagreb (2006). We are delighted to be holding this year’s meeting in Russia-Moscow, a new Full Participant within The European Library community. The event will focus on how we can attract users of all the national libraries of Europe and is called "Transforming the user experience: optimising the impact and reach of our content".

Objective

Collaboration between the partners of The European Library is vital to increasing the quality of our portal content. Zagreb's meeting in 2006 emphasised the need to extend exhibitions and key themes; we are currently developing these throughout the portal. We also would like to enhance the way that collections are presented and promoted.

Each national library is up against the same dilemma; how to display content of quality that will satisfy both specialists and non-specialists?

The European Library currently represents 371 collections throughout Europe. We would like the EWG members to brainstorm and discuss ways to maximize the exposure of the richness of these collections, with a special focus on digital content and objects. Ultimately, the purpose of the 3rd EWG workshop is to draw common ground that will enable The European Library to promote content across borders by fully engaging the user.
