Sally Chambers' fascination with libraries began at an early age. In 1994 she turned this fascination into a career and until 2005 primarily worked in academic libraries in the UK. In 2000 she decided to focus on digital libraries. During this time she coordinated a fore-runner to Enquire, a digital enquiry service for UK public libraries and developed an online library for distance learning students. Her work in European projects began in 2001 with the Covax project. She joined The European Library Office in January 2005 where she has undertaken a number of different roles. Since January 2009, she coordinates The European Library’s technical team, where she ensures that the objectives described in The European Library’s Technical Plan are achieved. She is also the regional account coordinator for the national libraries in Scandinavia. In her free-time she volunteers at a shelter for homeless people in her home town of Utrecht.

Valentine Charles joined The European Library/Europeana team in June 2009. Valentine is our Ingestion Specialist and is responsible for harvesting the collections of The European Library Portal. Her role also involves assisting in the development of The Handbook and The European Library Application Profiles for Objects and Collection Descriptions. Valentine has recently completed her master degree in "New technologies applied to history" at the Ecole Nationale des Chartes in Paris. She also studied palaeography, archival science, diplomatics combined or associated in computer science. Valentine has a keen interest in museums, libraries and loves hiking and jogging.

Jill Cousins has many years experience in web publishing, which are now being applied to the library side of the fence with the launch of The European Library.org in March 2005. Jill has transferred the lessons learnt as the European Business Development Director of VNU New Media to scholarly publishing, looking after the online journals of Blackwell Publishing. Prior to publishing, Jill worked as Marketing and Event Director for Learned Information, running Online Information in London, extending Internet World throughout Europe and creating Knowledge Management. Her experience of libraries is partly as a user, but also as a provider of information to businesses and industries having run her own research company, First Contact, prior to selling it to Disclosure Ltd in the early 90’s. All of which is very deviant from her first career as a Middle Eastern Map Researcher for the Ministry of Defence.

Louise joined the European Library in 2007 from Cranfield University (UK), where she was Research and Innovation Manager for the Library Service. In 2001, she was seconded to the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) as Collections Manager responsible for e-books and research data, a job which gave her a lot of contact with the academic publishing sector. Her early career was as a Slavist at the University of Birmingham and she spent 18 months on a project in Poland for the British Council. Louise has a first degree in European languages (Russian/Spanish/Portuguese) and postgraduate degrees in Cultural Policy and Management and Librarianship.

Aubéry Escande is Communications and Editorial Manager for The European Library. He coordinates the development of its communications and editorial strategy, including the virtual exhibition space, e-newsletter and rich media resources. Aubéry is also the European Film Gateway (EFG) liaison officer for Europeana, Europe's gateway to cultural heritage. EFG is a project that will contribute extensive movie material to Europeana. Aubéry is responsible for efficient content ingestion from EFG into the Europeana prototype service. He also coordinates the communications flow between Europeana's governing body, EDL Foundation, and the EFG project. Aubéry previously worked as journalist for several specialist magazines and news websites such as Sapenda.com, and NewMonday.com.


Mr. Nuno Freire


Interoperability Architect

Nuno Freire holds a MSc. in Informatics and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico of the Technical University of Lisbon. The bulk of his career has focused on international projects in the digital libraries sphere. His areas of interest include interoperability, information retrieval and data quality, particularly in its application to digital libraries and catalogues. He participated in several European projects including NEDLIB, The European Library, LEAF, MALVINE, DIGMAP, TELplus, Europeana Connect and ARROW.

Andreas Juffinger joined The European Library in February 2010 as Senior Developer/Technical Manager and is therefore responsible for the ongoing development of the portal and services. Andreas graduated at Technical University Graz with a specialization on Web, Web Crawling, Information Retrieval and Machine Learning. He has more than 10 years of professional working experience as developer and administrator of Oracle Databases, Enterprise Java Applications, and Java Web Applications. Further he worked as a consultant for performance tuning as well as trainer for Oracle Administrators and Java Developers. Andreas has been working in several European and National funded projects as technical and project manager since 2003. He has been a key researcher at the Know-Center, Austria's Competence Center for Knowledge Management, for graphs and graph mining. His PhD work focuses on graph pattern analysis.

Chiara was born in Bari, a sunny city on the Adriatic coast in the South of Italy. Her studies at the University of Florence focused on linguistics and literature, and she moved to the Netherlands in 2008 for a MA at Leiden University in Book and Digital Media Studies. Chiara joined The European Library in early 2010 as an intern for the Editorial team. She is now an Operations Officer, helping to ingest, index and test collections before they are displayed on The European Library portal. Chiara is passionate about digital humanities, e-publishing, digital media technologies and everything that merges computer technology with art, literature and, more generally, cultural heritage.


Ms. Magali Mermet

Magali is French and was raised on the Côte d’Azur, a truly wonderful area where she developed a love of open spaces, animal protection and generally an environmentally minded spirit! Magali joined the IT sphere in 2000 after scientific studies (medicine and biology). She then gradually pursued her qualifications from developer to technician through internship. Magali developed her first professional experience for "Fast Informatic" in Paris as Senior Technician while studying at Paris V University. She then moved to The Hague where she worked for the International Criminal Court as IT assistant. She then switched to hp OpenView administrator, PC images cataloguer, in charge of access rights on Active Directory, etc. Magali joined The European Library in May 2008 as Junior Developer.

Markus joined the Technical and Operations team in 2011 as a Java Developer. Previously, he worked at the Austrian's Competence Center for Knowledge Management in the field of Machine Learning and Data Mining. He studied Telematics at Technical University Graz and has published several papers on high level conferences.



Mr. Rene Wiermer

Rene Wiermer is a Java Developer on The European Library's Technical and Operations team. He previously worked on commercial open source software and in Linux administration. He studied Computational Visualistics at the University of Magdeburg and has a keen interest in the cultural sector.
